Nobel Peace Prize is a Joke

The instructions in the will of Alfred Nobel were that the Peace Prize was to be awarded to the person who “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." (Ref. 1)

In 2012, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union (EU). The award stated that "for over six decades {the EU has} contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe’.” (Ref. 2) This aroused strong negative reactions from many since the EU is currently in total disarray. Here are a few of the comments:

“The Norwegian Peace Council . . . called for the resignation of the head of the Nobel committee after it awarded the peace prize to the European Union. They . . . sent this statement [edited]:
“The Norwegian Peace Council takes a critical stance to the {Nobel Peace Prize} endowment. Granting the EU the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012 indicates its highly political dimension, awarding it to a project that for the past year has proven to represent the opposite of peace. . . . Awarding the prize to the EU illustrates how the Norwegian Nobel Committee repeatedly appoints recipients that are irrelevant and who only serves to consolidate an already well-established societal power structure.
“The Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision does not comply with Alfred Nobel’s mission statement, which sets out to reward peace activists’ efforts throughout the preceding year. To the contrary, the award promotes the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s own interests and political visions.” (Ref. 3)

“This goes to show that the Norwegians really do have a sense of humor.”
     – Nigel Farage (Ref. 4)

“Is this a joke? It’s the last thing I would expect. It mocks us and what we are going through right now. All it will do is infuriate people here.”
     - Chrisoula Panagiotidi (Ref. 4)

“This is a huge political misjudgment to give [the Nobel] to the European Union, at a time when the euro scheme is doing so much to promote dissension within Europe. Just look at the way the relationship between Greece and Germany has deteriorated massively in recent months, primarily because of the joint membership of the single currency scheme.”
     - John Redwood (Ref. 4)

“The Nobel Committee is a little late for an April Fool’s joke. The EU’s policies have exacerbated the fallout of the financial crisis and led to social unrest that we haven’t seen for a generation. Presumably, this prize is for peace and harmony on the streets of Athens and Madrid.”
     - Martin Callanan (Ref. 4)

“The leader of the EU is Germany, which is in an economic war with southern Europe. I consider this war equal to a real war. They {the Nobel Committee} don’t help peace.”
     - Martin Callanan (Ref. 4)

“The Nobel Peace Prize 2009 was awarded to Barack H. Obama ‘for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples’.” (Ref. 5) Just what did President Obama do to deserve the award. Remember, President Obama was elected in 2008. The award in 2009 came well before his foreign policy could be formulated or put into effect.

“The Nobel Peace Prize 2007 was awarded jointly to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. ‘for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change’.” (Ref. 6) How has Al Gore and the climate change crusaders have contributed to world peace, especially in light of the subsequent scientific analyses that conflicts with the claims that manmade greenhouse gases are the cause of global warming.

“’The Nobel Peace Prize 1994 was awarded jointly to Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin "for their efforts to create peace in the Middle East.’” (Ref. 7) So tell me, what peace has been created in the Middle East since the award of the 1994 Nobel Prize for Peace? Why was a Peace Prize awarded to Yasser Arafat - a known terrorist, a mass murderer and an unrepentant opponent of Middle East peace?

Perhaps the following blog from BSH best sums up what the Nobel Peace Prize has become. “The Nobel Peace Prize is a total joke. Yasser Arafat, an unrepentant terrorist who engaged in diplomacy only to the minimum extent possible for his benefit, and turned to terrorism when that suited him, exposed the NPP as a sham. Then Al Gore, whose propaganda movie was so full of scientific holes it had to be banned from schools in England. Then Barack Obama, who had exactly zero accomplishments on the world stage (besides just getting elected), but bumped up US military activity from two wars that had the support of the Congress to a third war that was illegal in all respects. The Nobel Peace Prize is utterly execrable.” (Ref. 8)

Alfred Nobel would be turning over in his grave if he was aware of how the money he bequeathed is being used. Just what are the real peace accomplishments of the Nobel Peace Prize recipients identified above? The annual awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize has now become nothing more than a big Joke.
